Sustainability; the student as consumer; formative assessment

Students’ experiences of the internationalisation of higher education through overseas study Subject: FW: National Sustainable Schools Conference 2011 – Let’s get Creative! Lord Hill, Minster for Schools, has stated that “The Government recognises the importance of sustainability to all of us, but particularly for children.” Visit www.se-ed.org.uk for further information on the workshop presenters and about the day! This annual regional and online conference is a great way to learn together, with other teachers and students, on how to save money (up to 80% saved by one workshop presenter), help students to engage with their work better (creative ways to enthuse), improve grades and develop new ideas generated with and for your school. The theme this year is Let’s get creative!, and you can join in regionally and online from October 2011. The first event is 21st October 2011 at ZSL London Zoo with date soon to be confirmed for early November in Leicester – all workshops and presentations shall be captured and placed online with unique online workshops, presentations and spaces to share knowledge available too. Teachers Early Bird rate £150 and students only £30! Teachers are invited to bring students along to co-learn how to drive sustainability into your school! Embedding formative assessment with teacher learning communities. This one day conference on 28 September, led by Professor Dylan Wiliam, might be of interest to you and your students in the Department of Teacher Education.

Implemented properly, formative assessment can have an extraordinary impact on student achievement, but too often, the implementation is patchy, or focused on the use of assessment to track students’ progress rather than improve learning. At this conference, participants will learn:

1. What kinds of formative assessment have the biggest impact on student achievement

2. Practical techniques for establishing effective formative assessment in every classroom

3. How formative assessment can be sustained and developed through the use of teacher learning communities

Who is the conference for? The conference would be suitable for any teachers with an interest in developing their understanding of formative assessment.
